I need some help guys. I have a bunch of Hirst arts blocks sitting around and I decided to make a Gladiator Arena for our North African provinces. I am modeling it after, and to be compatible with Herrodadogs excellent arena. I have been playing around with loose blocks trying to decide what to go with and I want to see what you guys think. Take a look at these two options and vote!

When I first started playing with this, here is what I started with. This is the center section with the gate below the big shot box. |

The wings where the peasant scum can sit and watch the matches. |

Here is my alternate idea which adds a railing. I kind of like this one. I also have tried doing this same thing with a little overhang into the arena. When I do the overhang, it caps those half pillars. |
The first option looks a lot better in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI'm with The Angry Lurker - the first is the best.
ReplyDeletei agree with y'all, especially from an architectural standpoint. i love all the statuary embellishments and detailing. great job, willy!
ReplyDeleteI like the railing because it seems to finish off the top a bit better, although the arenas I have seen do not seem to have such things. Also, I think the pillars look awkward and out of place without something to cap them. A small overhang that goes onto the top of the pillars might be a good idea as you suggest. Whatever you do, though, I reckon it will look awesome.
ReplyDeleteI know, I'm not helping but I like both options.
ReplyDeleteSuper stuff. I like 1 and 3. 1 fits the bill and 3 works well in a 'somehwere to put the spectators' way. Hirst Arts blocks rock!
ReplyDeleteI'd go with opt 1. These should look pretty nice once your done.
ReplyDeleteI like the appeal of the railing, but think overall the first option would look better. In the end though, you can always add the rail later if you want to!
ReplyDeleteEither way, that really looks the business! Those Hirst blocks are fantastic things...
I like the third option with the top entrance. I think that capping the pillars would look good (assuming the right looking top).
ReplyDeleteI like the third option more, but I have the feeling that the first version is more realistic.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should try to build both versions...and just send the arena you like less to me ;o)

I like that railing and an overhang that caps the pillars will look more aesthetically pleasing. (Do I get brownie points for using the word aesthetically?)
ReplyDeleteI really like the gate and the railing! The raliing does finish it off very nicely ... very inspiring for me to create something for my new 40mm Greeks project!
ReplyDeleteWow thanks guys. Lots o feedback. The only problem is I knew you jokers would split the vote and I'd still be where I started! At this moment I think the railing guys may be pulling ahead.
ReplyDeleteOliver, I wish I had that kind of time!
1st one is my choice. Both are good, but I think that the railing is too massive. Furthermore, a railing is much more prone to break than a solid wall.
ReplyDeleteI think 1st option is the best. BTW, what a nice stuff you have...
ReplyDeleteUh oh guys, now it looks like option 1 has closed the gap!
ReplyDeleteDecisions, decisions.
I think the best thing to do now is to get Herrodadog to come over and use his creative genius to help me set the final stones. I can't wait to finish this puppy.
